My children are now accustomed to seeing me with variously colored substances applied to my face. Homemade face masks, such as this probiotic yogurt face mask, are excellent for hydrating and nourishing the skin. The only drawback is that it needs to be used immediately. This seaweed face mask, on the other hand, can be stored in powder form and mixed on-demand to complement your skincare regimen.
It is rich in antioxidants and superfood ingredients that help draw impurities out of the skin. Additionally, a seaweed face mask boosts collagen, which reduces the appearance of fine lines. Who cares if it makes you resemble The Hulk while you’re at it!
Seaweed Face Mask Ingredients
This mask contains kelp and spirulina seaweed powders. I’ve also added some French green clay, also known as sea clay, for its purifying benefits, and it fits well with the green theme. You can also incorporate essential oils for additional benefits and an improved scent, since it can smell a bit fishy.
French Green Clay
Originally mined in France, French green clay comes from ancient mud layers beneath the sea, making it a rich source of nutrients. It is often used in face masks for its cleansing and exfoliating qualities. It’s a great choice for normal, combination, or oily skin types.
The green color of this clay is due to kelp, algae, and iron oxides, depending on its origin. It also contains minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium. French green clay is purifying and is even used to remove lead and heavy metals from wastewater. It is also beneficial for acne-prone skin, thanks to its ability to draw out impurities and its antibacterial properties.
For sensitive or dry skin, consider adding some oil to the clay mask. Alternatively, kaolin clay is a good substitution for dry skin. You can follow up your face mask with some homemade lotion for extra moisturizing.
Spirulina and Kelp Powder
These ingredients make this a seaweed face mask. Spirulina is among the most nutrient-rich foods on the planet, even utilized by astronauts on space missions. It’s high in protein, iron, and inflammation-reducing antioxidants. Spirulina, newly classified as a bacterium, originates from single-cell algae.
Kelp powder is another superfood ingredient in this mask. It’s rich in vitamins K, A, and B-12, as well as calcium, iron, iodine, and magnesium. Algae like kelp offer over 70 trace minerals. Kelp also possesses antioxidants to help reduce redness and safeguard against skin damage, in addition to being an excellent skin moisturizer.
Customizing Your Face Mask
Seaweed, with its vast array of nutrients and minerals, complements both oil and water-based ingredients. Although oil and water don’t mix, this provides versatility.
If your skin requires extra moisture, use a carrier oil or plain yogurt for the seaweed face mask. Aloe vera gel, hydrosols, or plain water are also suitable. Adding glycerin to the liquid mix is beneficial for the skin. If you’re new to hydrosols, here are some options and their skin benefits. Hydrosols are the byproduct of distilling essential oils and make excellent toners.

- Tea tree hydrosol – Soothes redness, irritation, and treats blemishes. Promotes skin repair.
- Helichrysum hydrosol – Purifies and balances the skin, reduces swelling and inflammation, and encourages skin healing.
- Lavender hydrosol – Calming for both skin and mood, addressing a variety of skin irritations like redness and itchiness.
- Calendula hydrosol – A favorable choice for any skin irritation or inflammation.

Instructions:
- Mix the kelp powder, clay, and spirulina in a small glass jar. This dry blend remains potent for years when kept away from light and heat.
- In a small bowl, combine 1 teaspoon of the dry mix with approximately 2.5 teaspoons of liquid. It should be thin enough to spread but not overly runny.
- Optionally, add 1-2 drops of essential oils.
- Apply an even layer to your face and leave it on for 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse off the mask with warm water.
- Apply your preferred moisturizer if necessary.
Note: The dry powder lasts for several years if stored away from moisture and heat. Use the mask immediately after mixing with liquid.
