Sugar Salt Hair Texturizer Spray

DIY texturizing spray

Finding effective natural hair care products can be daunting. I’ve previously shared my natural hair spray recipe and beach waves sea salt spray. I liked them both but was curious if they could be combined into one versatile daily product.

Turns out, merging these two recipes is not only feasible but fantastic.

Sugar and Spice Texturizing Spray

I have baby-fine hair that doesn’t hold styles well, despite being naturally wavy. It’s also long and blonde, often becoming weighed down and appearing dirty with certain products. I wanted hair styling products offering light hold and enhancing waves, while avoiding parabens, fragrance, sulfates, and copolymer often found in sprays. These beachy waves and homemade hair sprays added body without making my hair greasy or heavy.

As a busy mom, simplicity is key. This texturizing hair spray combines the texturizing power of my original sea spray with the hold of my homemade hair spray. The result is a long-lasting spray suitable for thin, straight, or curly hair. (I used it to style my hair in the accompanying picture.)

I also integrated essential oils for fragrance and stimulating hair growth. Spending much time outside in summer, these oils protect and encourage new hair growth.

Natural Texturizing Spray

This affordable and easy-to-make spray performs better on my hair than any store-bought texture spray. It doesn’t make your hair greasy or rigid, yet effectively controls frizz and locks in moisture.

Even if you invest in a high-quality glass spray bottle (designed for multiple uses) and opt for all additional ingredients, this recipe remains cheaper than a 4-ounce bottle of Bumble and Bumble Surf Volume Spray—one of the few conventional products I’ve liked.

I’ve received questions about the spray bottle for this recipe. I initially used an 8-ounce fine mist spray bottle, recently switching to a glass spray bottle that offers both fine mist and thicker spray options. Another alternative is to repurpose a glass apple cider vinegar bottle, replacing the top with a standard spray bottle top.

  1. Add all ingredients to the spray bottle, except hot water.
  2. Add hot water, filling the bottle, leaving space for the sprayer top.
  3. Shake until ingredients dissolve. Alternatively, mix all ingredients in a pint-sized mason jar, then transfer to the sprayer bottle.

Notes: Adding conditioner might not suit all hair types and can thicken the spray. If avoiding conditioner, soak the spray top in hot water to dissolve sugar/salt if it sticks.

How to Use the Texturizing Spray for Styling

Spray into dry hair and scrunch until dry. Optionally blow-dry on low while scrunching to speed up drying. For added volume, loosely curl 1-inch sections with a curling iron, then scrunch again.

For easy morning styling, braid dry hair into a French braid (or French braid pigtails) at night, spritz with this spray. In the morning, use dry shampoo if necessary, unbraid, re-spray, and scrunch for all-day waves and texture.

Why Use Essential Oils?

They’re optional but add pleasant scents and hair benefits. Unlike carrier oils, essential oils are volatile and don’t leave hair greasy.

  • Rosemary: Stimulates scalp circulation for better hair growth and blocks the hormone DHT leading to hair loss.
  • Lavender: Promotes thicker and faster hair growth, as seen in a 2016 animal study.
  • Lemon: Offers a fresh scent and boosts circulation for healthier hair.
  • Clary sage: Reduces skin inflammation, controls oil production, and enhances scalp circulation.
