Sometimes I create batches of reusable disinfecting wipes for cleaning purposes. This inspired me to try crafting something similar for my facial care routine. These homemade facial wipes could quickly become a new favorite in your skincare lineup for removing makeup or simply refreshing your face!
Homemade Face Wipes
It’s said that makeup remover wipes and disposable facial cleansing wipes take around a century to biodegrade, largely because over 90% are made from plastic. This contributes significantly to landfill issues, not to mention the toxic chemicals and preservatives found in many wipes and beauty products. With the disposable wipes market projected to surpass 8 billion in sales by 2027, it’s evident that many have grown accustomed to the convenience of using makeup remover pads and wipes. Fortunately, making your own easy DIY makeup remover wipes is a feasible alternative!
Challenges with Traditional Wipes
There are various ways to create your own DIY facial wipes. Some guides suggest using paper towels, cotton pads, or baby washcloths. Paper towels aren’t my preference as they’re not the most eco-friendly choice, and they often contain chemicals for bleaching and production. While healthier, unbleached versions are available, they can be expensive. Cotton pads are a viable alternative, though I recommend opting for organic versions. Many cotton producers use pesticides, insecticides, and other chemicals whose presence is often undisclosed, so the contents of non-organic cotton remain somewhat mysterious. Disposable cotton rounds still contribute to single-use waste, but their decomposition time isn’t as lengthy. If you prefer a disposable choice, here are some organic cotton rounds. Baby washcloths are frequently mentioned for DIY wipes because they are compact and soft, yet they typically contain synthetic, plastic-derived materials that pollute the water supply; hence, this is not advisable.
Optimal Homemade Face Wipes
For my homemade makeup remover wipes, I use options like flannel, cotton terrycloth, or organic cotton. You can also repurpose receiving blankets, cut-up cotton T-shirts, or new reusable baby wipes. Check out an easy tutorial on how to craft your own professional-looking fabric wipes. If sewing isn’t your thing, consider these pre-made organic reusable cotton wipes, or simply cut up some flannel and cotton T-shirts you already have.
Ingredients for DIY Wipes
These wipes are quite akin to my baby wipes recipe, which I’ve used on my face several times. This version, however, incorporates ingredients beneficial for moisturizing and cleansing various skin types, including sensitive and dry skin, or those with acne. The base comprises natural ingredients like distilled water, witch hazel, aloe vera, and essential oils. Castile soap substitutes as a face wash, and a liquid oil is added for smooth application and added hydration, with olive oil, avocado oil, and fractionated coconut oil being good options. Witch hazel serves as a toner with astringent properties suitable for oily skin. For those with very dry skin, reducing or omitting witch hazel is advisable. Aloe vera offers soothing and moisturizing effects, making it a favorite in skincare recipes.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are optional but can add a pleasant fragrance and additional skin benefits. Breathing them in also offers mental and emotional health advantages. Below are several essential oil options for your DIY face wipes:
- Tea Tree Oil – Helps acne-prone skin and reduces inflammation
- Frankincense – Benefits mature and blemished skin, generally great for facial use
- Helichrysum – Assists with irritated skin, eczema, and dermatitis
- Lavender – Calms inflammation and is effective for various skin issues
- Geranium – Balances oil production and is effective for acne, dermatitis, and eczema
- Patchouli – Good for acne, dermatitis, eczema, and mature skin
- Virginia Cedarwood – Good for oily skin, acne, and dermatitis
- Roman Chamomile – Effective for dermatitis and inflamed or damaged skin
These are just a few choices; remember to select skin-friendly essential oils. Avoid oils like lemon, lime, and bergamot as they can cause burns if exposed to sunlight. Exclude essential oils if using these wipes for eye makeup removal.
