Homemade Magnesium Roll-On Deodorant

Over the years, I’ve refined several homemade natural deodorant formulas for lasting protection. Drawn by the idea of roll-on antiperspirant deodorants, I wanted to attempt a healthier alternative. You can never have too many homemade deodorant choices, right?

Not only is this version free of aluminum and alcohol, but it also provides natural odor protection. It’s suitable for sensitive skin and allows you to customize the scent!

Roll-On Deodorant Stick

During high school, I was someone who relied on clinical strength deodorants, lured by the promises of fresh scents and 12-hour protection. Little did I realize I was applying parabens, aluminum, and other harmful ingredients to my underarms.

While DIY deodorants might not have the commercial appeal of a conventional powder fresh invisible solid, they’re undeniably healthier. I’ve discovered that natural deodorants can be quite effective once you find the right formulation.

My version includes magnesium to help fight underarm odor and restore mineral balance. It dries relatively quickly because of ingredients like arrowroot and baking soda. You can also incorporate moisturizers like aloe vera and glycerin if desired.

The Power of Magnesium

My children and I regularly use topical magnesium to aid sleep and enhance magnesium levels. I’ve noticed that magnesium oil alone works well as a deodorant, though it might not suit everyone. It can feel slightly sticky and cause a stinging sensation for those unaccustomed.

Magnesium is beneficial for the skin, both inside and out, as seen in products like magnesium lotion. According to dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman, it helps balance hormones and enhances skin cellular processes. My skin is smoother and less prone to breakouts when I use magnesium oil.

You can use plain magnesium oil in a roller bottle, but magnesium hydroxide is another viable option often found in magnesium-based deodorants, great for skin care. You can mix the powder into a regular deodorant recipe or create a liquid version to apply easily.

Milk of Magnesia

Magnesium hydroxide, commonly available under the name milk of magnesia, is usually recognized as a laxative. Previously, some brands were composed strictly of magnesium hydroxide and purified water, but now it seems every available version has been reformulated to include bleach.

Yes, the same chlorine bleach used in pools and for removing stains from clothing. It’s surprising that the FDA hasn’t banned bleach in consumable products.

The basic unscented roll-on magnesium deodorant uses store-bought milk of magnesia. However, since I want to avoid bleach on my skin, I created an alternative. This recipe involves mixing magnesium hydroxide powder with water to make your own version of milk of magnesia. The mixture tends to separate, but shaking it before each use solves the problem.

Roll-On Deodorant Odor Protection

As this isn’t an antiperspirant, it won’t safeguard against wetness like aluminum-based products. Despite that, I’ve noticed I perspire less since switching to natural deodorants. Once free from toxins, especially those from deodorants, my body doesn’t need to expel them through sweat, leading to a fresher scent.

Placing aluminum and toxins near lymph nodes and sensitive breast tissue might not be advisable. If you’ve used conventional deodorants or antiperspirants, you might want to consider an armpit detox first to help restore the skin’s microbiome balance.

Deodorant Container Options

Experiences with roll-on bottles can vary. My first set guaranteed leak prevention but was excessively protective, preventing any product from dispensing. My current bottles perform better, though some reviewers mention inconsistencies.

Without a roll-on bottle, this mixture can function in a spray bottle. It also works well in a small jar applied with a cotton ball. This recipe is enough to fill two roller bottles.

Instructions:

  1. Heat the distilled water until it’s very hot.
  2. Add the water and magnesium powder to a bowl and whisk together.
  3. Mix in the remaining ingredients and whisk until smooth.
  4. Pour the mixture into your roll-on deodorant bottles.
  5. Shake well before each use.

Notes:

  • To use pre-made milk of magnesia, swap out the magnesium hydroxide and water for 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of the liquid.
  • I used 10 drops of orange essential oil, 6 drops of cypress essential oil, and 4 drops of tea tree essential oil.

Customize the Scent

You can use any skincare-safe essential oil. I maintained a 2% dilution to prevent irritation, though you can safely double that with oils like lavender or tea tree. Alternatively, reduce or eliminate them entirely. Witch hazel tends to have a strong aroma, but essential oils can mask it.

Lavender, tea tree, and patchouli are great options. I chose sweet orange for its antimicrobial properties, tea tree for its antimicrobial benefits, and cypress to help reduce wetness. Mix and match to create a personalized blend!
