Beets are among my top vegetables. I incorporate beetroot powder in homemade blush, toss beets into salads, and use them to craft delicious strawberry beet fruit leather. Beetroot gummies provide a delightful way to enjoy the benefits of beets in a chewy form.
My children adore chewable vitamins, and beet gummies are rich in nutrients. They’re a refined sugar-free, gluten-free option to boost their nutritional intake. Plus, they offer additional benefits for athletes or anyone in need of a brain or energy boost. This unassuming root vegetable is truly beneficial!
You can purchase pre-made beetroot extract chews at stores, but making them at home is simple. Many of the store-bought versions contain additional ingredients I’d prefer to avoid.
So, what makes beets so special?
Health Benefits of Beets
Beets owe their red color to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant betalains, while yellow beets gain similar properties from betaxanthins. These compounds not only shield against oxidative damage but also reduce overall inflammation. A 2014 study revealed participants taking beetroot extract supplements experienced 27% less pain compared to a placebo group. Their energy levels were also notably higher!
Beets are also abundant in nitrates, which convert into nitric oxide upon digestion, enhancing blood flow. Research supports that nitric oxide production aids not just in blood circulation but also in overall heart health. Beets are recognized for their natural blood pressure regulation, supporting cardiovascular health by enhancing the function of heart cells and the cells lining our blood and lymphatic vessels.
A meta-analysis showed that nitric oxide supplements improved the endurance performance of non-athletes in athletic tests. Beets, high in nitrates, offer similar benefits for physical performance. Besides boosting physical energy, beets also provide a mental lift.
Beets contain vitamin C, B vitamins, iron, manganese, potassium, copper, zinc, and magnesium. You can explore more about why beets are remarkable here.
Health Benefits of Pomegranates
Pomegranates are another superfood packed with antioxidants and nutrients. They have been extensively studied for their anti-cancer properties and blood pressure benefits. Further research indicates that pomegranate juice enhances exercise performance and recovery. While not everyone may be a professional athlete, any improvement in physical movement and recovery is valuable.
Pomegranates feature potassium, zinc, magnesium, and cover 50% of the daily value for copper. They are also rich in vitamins C, K, E, and several B vitamins.
Additionally, there’s the gelatin that helps bind the gummies together in this recipe. Gelatin has its own impressive health benefits, which I discuss here.
How to Make Beet Gummies
The method is quite similar to my other gummy recipes. Instead of using beet juice, I blend the whole beetroot. Juicing beets can be a messy task and not everyone owns a juicer. It’s also uncommon to find bottled beet juice in grocery store juice sections.
Just cut the beet into pieces and blend with pomegranate juice. Ensure your blender lid is secure as this mixture can stain! Stir in the gelatin, pour into your favorite molds, and enjoy delicious beet gummies.
