I’ve authored numerous articles on natural hair care over the years, featuring recipes like nourishing conditioners and herbal treatments for healthier hair. Nonetheless, healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. This hair growth oil nourishes the scalp, making it perfect for anyone experiencing hair loss and breakage.
Originally, I crafted this recipe for men noticing thinning hair as they age. However, many women also seek hair products to enhance hair health. Factors like excessive styling, tight hairstyles (such as braids), heat tools, thyroid issues, androgenetic alopecia, and pregnancy can all contribute to hair loss.
Over half of all women will experience hair loss at some point. Even if your hair isn’t thinning, you might want longer locks.
After a pregnancy, I experimented with natural ways to promote hair regrowth for myself and discovered that this hair growth oil works just as effectively for men seeking to halt hair loss. Regardless of who you are, if your hair appears less abundant, the good news is that natural options are available.
Encourage Healthy Hair Growth
The foundation of healthy hair, like everything else, is a nutritious diet. Nutrients such as biotin and collagen keep all hair types strong and healthy. Experts advise focusing on B vitamins, vitamin C (for collagen production), Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins D and A.
An iron deficiency can also impact hair health. Iron is crucial for promoting healthy blood flow to hair follicles. I try to get nutrients from whole foods, but supplements can help fill gaps. Adequate nutrition can minimize hair breakage, receding hairlines, and split ends too.
Hydration and minerals are equally vital. If you notice dryness, frizz, or a dry scalp, you might need to increase water intake. You can find my hydrating mineral drink recipe elsewhere.
Oil Treatment for Hair Growth
If your hair needs a little extra care, a natural scalp treatment might be the solution. Various natural oils promote easy and fast hair growth. Popular options include almond oil, argan oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. For alopecia sufferers, vitamin E can reduce oxidative scalp damage while encouraging growth.
In this recipe, I utilize:
-
Castor oil: Known for detox purposes in remedies like castor oil packs, it can also thicken and lengthen hair and eyelashes. It prevents hair loss while greatly enhancing growth. My hair grew 1.5 inches in a month when used twice a week!
-
Black Seed Oil: Renowned for numerous benefits, particularly for hair growth. It can address some fungal infections causing hair loss and may prevent thinning at the start. Use either internally or topically, but first test a small amount on the inner arm as black seed oil can irritate some individuals.
-
Rosemary Oil: Famous for stimulating hair growth, it’s frequently added to treatments and shampoos. A small amount adds a pleasant scent and boosts the formula’s efficacy by reducing inflammation and dandruff.
- Lavender Essential Oil: Excellent for both skin health and hair growth. It complements the aroma of black cumin seed and rosemary for a refreshing scent.
Tea tree and peppermint oils are also beneficial, although they aren’t included in my recipe. Both can be added if desired; tea tree helps with dandruff, oily scalp, or fungus, while peppermint stimulates the scalp and enhances blood flow for hair growth.
Optional Olive and Cayenne Oil
Cayenne enhances circulation and is a traditional remedy for hair loss and sore muscles. To integrate it into your hair growth oil, infuse it easily. The steps are:
- Add ingredients to the top of a double boiler and infuse for about an hour.
- Alternatively, you can perform a solar infusion by placing cayenne and oil in a glass jar in sunlight for a few days.
- After infusion, strain the cayenne out and reserve the oil for your hair growth formula.
Natural Hair Growth Oil Recipe
This recipe blends oils like castor oil, black cumin seed, rosemary, and lavender to support hair growth.
- Yield: 3 ounces
- Author: Katie Wells
Instructions:
- Combine all ingredients in a dark glass bottle. A brown dropper bottle is suitable, though I reuse the black cumin seed bottle, which features special Miron glass to safeguard oils from rancidity.
- Wet hair lightly and massage in 10-30 drops (or ½ to 1 teaspoon) onto the scalp.
- Let it sit for an hour or overnight before rinsing. Using it at night with a towel on your pillow prevents oil stains.
- Apply weekly or as needed to promote hair growth.
Notes:
Test the oils on a small inner arm area before full application. Avoid use if any reaction or sensitivity occurs. A small percentage of people with sensitive skin might experience irritation from black cumin seed oil.
